Vandals jeopardize youth baseball team's fall season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- On a late summer evening in south Charlotte, kids practice baseball anticipating tryouts for the fall season. It is an almost perfect picture, except for one thing.
?

The outfield fence is lying on the ground and the snack shack next to the playing field is nothing but charred ashes.
?

John Smith is President of Sardis Dixie Youth Baseball.
?

"At first it was utter disbelief," Smith said.
?

He is the one who found the snack shack burned down last April.
?

Fire investigators believe vandals set fire to a porta-john and as it burned it collapse onto the snack shack.
?

Smith's son, Jackson, is one of the players.
?

"Why would they do that," wondered Jackson.
?

But there was more to come.
?

Over the Fourth of July holiday, someone rammed through the outfield fence in a vehicle and then sped off.
?

With a broken fence, the kids will not be able to play here for the fall season that begins in September.
?

"I'm not one to hold a grudge," the elder Smith said. "I just want to get the fence fixed so that I can keep the field running for these kids."
?

Estimates are it will cost about $800 to repair the fence in time for the fall season.
?

Rebuilding the snack shack will be a lot more expensive.
?

"Early estimates from contractors I have spoke to say between three and $5,000," said Smith.
?

Smith is hoping some local businesses will step in and help.

2014 NFL Draft Preseason Scouting Notes: Eric Ebron

North Carolina?s Eric Ebron is one of the most explosive tight ends in college football. (photo: wralsportsfan.com)

DraftBrowns.com Editor: Brendan Leister

School: North Carolina

Position: Tight End

Jersey number: #85

Class: Junior

Size: 6?4?, 245 lbs.

Eric Ebron is one of the most athletic tight ends in all of college football. ?Not only does Ebron?s athleticism show up on the offensive side of the ball, but North Carolina?s coaching staff also used him as a situational pass rusher at times during his sophomore campaign.

During Ebron?s freshman season in 2011, he caught 10 passes and produced 207 yards (20.7 yards per reception) and a touchdown. ?Ebron took a big leap during his second season at Chapel Hill. ?As a sophomore in 2012, Ebron caught 40 passes and produced 625 yards (15.63 yards per reception) and four touchdowns.

Eric Ebron is an incredibly talented receiving tight end who must improve at doing the little things. ?In the games that I viewed, Ebron had too many dropped passes. ?Whether the drops had to do with focus or simply having poor hands, this is something that he must improve upon if he wishes to take his game to the next level. ?Ebron is an extremely smooth and explosive athlete who regularly uses his athletic ability to get behind linebackers and threaten the seam of the defense. ?Ebron also displays a considerable amount of toughness when running routes over the middle. ?Although he does not always catch every pass in traffic, he does not back down, and still keeps going over the middle unafraid of taking big hits. ?Ebron regularly fights for yards after the catch and he can be difficult for defenders to bring down once he gets a head full of steam. ?When forced to adjust to passes away from his frame, Ebron displays excellent body control, but struggles to come down with the passes too often. ?All in all, Ebron?s high upside as a receiver is apparent and cleaning up the dropped passes would be huge in taking the next step in his development.

Ebron is a very versatile tight end. ?He has experience playing in the slot and as an in-line tight end. ?With Ebron?s combination of supreme athletic ability and size, I could see a team flexing him out wide and forcing the defense to match up with him on an island with a cornerback, safety, or linebacker. ?Football is a game of matchups and explosive, versatile tight ends like Ebron are highly sought after for a reason.

As a blocker, Ebron does a solid job overall. ?Although he consistently gives great effort and typically executes his assignment, Ebron must do a better job of keeping his hands inside, lowering his pad level, and driving his legs on contact on a play-in, play-out basis. ?Doing these things will allow Ebron to engage with defenders longer while allowing him to move defenders further off the point of attack. ?One area where I was very impressed with Ebron was in his ability to understand where the run was going and seal his man away from the run. ?All in all, Ebron shows flashes of being a very good blocking tight end. ?To take the next step during his junior season, Ebron must do all of the little things correctly with much more consistency.

As a situational pass rusher, Ebron looks extremely explosive and flexible off the edge. ?Although I only saw him in this capacity in limited snaps, it was evident that he possesses some pass rush potential and I would not be surprised to see him pass rushing in an expanded role this season. ?I do not expect NFL teams to look at Ebron as a conversion candidate, but you never know. ?If a team believes that he has more potential as a pass rusher, it is possible that he could be moved to defensive end or outside linebacker at the next level.

It is easy to see that Eric Ebron has a ton of potential as an all around tight end prospect. ?There are simply not many tight ends on the planet with his combination of size and athleticism. ?If Ebron can do the little things with much more consistency, he has a great chance of being a high pick whenever he decides to declare for the NFL Draft.

India: 6 get life for Swiss gang rape

2013-07-20 20:02

New Delhi - Six men accused in the gang-rape and robbery of a 39-year-old Swiss woman cyclist holidaying in India were sentenced to life terms on Saturday by a court in central India.

"All the accused have been convicted and we are satisfied with the judgement," said the public prosecutor in the case, Rajendra Tiwari, after the ruling handed down by a special court, the semi-official Press Trust of India and other local media reported.

The rape of the Swiss woman came three months after the fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a bus in Delhi in December, which brought simmering anger about the treatment of women in India to the surface.

India's legal system has faced intense scrutiny over its efforts to curb violence against women in the world's largest democracy following the Delhi gang rape in which the victim died of horrific internal injuries.

The six sentenced to life on Saturday were detained soon after the attack on the Swiss woman in mid-March in a remote, forested area of Datia district in central Madhya Pradesh state where the victim was camping with her husband.

Her 30-year-old husband was tied up as the woman was assaulted and the pair were also robbed, according to police.

Massive demonstrations

Only four of the six were charged with gang-rape because testimony from the victim said two of them were "only present at the crime scene", according to ML Dhody, a Datia police officer.

The other two accused were charged with assault and robbery but still received life-sentences.

Five of the men were farmers in their twenties while the sixth was 19 at the time of the attack, police said.

Weeks of massive demonstrations over the Delhi rape prompted India's parliament to toughen sex offence laws including doubling the minimum prison sentence for gang-rape to 20 years.

The trial of four adult suspects - another died while in jail from a suspected suicide in March - is underway in Delhi.

A fifth accused is being tried as a juvenile.

String of rapes

One woman is raped every 20 minutes, the National Crime Records Bureau says. But the crime is vastly under-reported because of the social stigma associated with such attacks.

The Swiss couple were reported to be on an adventure tourism trip in India and were cycling through northern the part of the country.

There have been a string of rapes involving foreigners reported in the past months.

Indian police said in June they investigating the gang-rape of a US tourist by a group of truckers while an Irish charity worker was reported to have been raped in the eastern city of Kolkata that same month.

Joe Biden to visit India from July 22; trade, defence on agenda

Joe Biden to visit India from July 22; trade, defence on agenda Washington: Joe Biden will embark on his maiden visit to India as US Vice President on July 22 to discuss key bilateral issues, including trade and defence, to make Indo-US ties the most important strategic partnership of the 21st century.

During his four-day-long stay in India, Biden will hold meetings with top Indian leadership, including President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Biden, accompanied by his wife Jill would arrive in New Delhi on July 22, would focus on four key issues of economic and trade ties, energy and climate change; defense co-operation and a wide range of regional co-operation.

Joe Biden to visit India from July 22; trade, defence on agenda

Biden, 70, had visited New Delhi in 2008 as a Senator.

He will also hold talks with Vice President Hamid Ansari and the Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj.

Biden, who wanted to travel to India in the first term itself, would begin his trip with a visit to the Gandhi Smriti Museum to show his respect to the Father of the Nation.

All his meetings have been scheduled for July 23, at the end of which he would attend a dinner hosted in his honour by Ansari.

Joe Biden to visit India from July 22; trade, defence on agenda

Biden would spend the next two days, July 24 and 25 -- in Mumbai, where he would meet the business leaders at a round table and deliver a policy speech at the Bombay Stock Exchange.

He is expected to set up an "ambitious vision" for India- US relationship, in addition to the a women's empowerment event at IIT Mumbai.

He would leave for Singapore on July 25.

All this while, Jill would hold a series of health and nutritional events in New Delhi and Mumbai and visit the Taj Mahal in Agra.

Biden, however, would not be visiting the Taj Mahal.

"One of the reasons why President (Barack) Obama called our relations with India, quote, 'a defining partnership of the century ahead' is that India is increasingly looking east as a force for security and growth in Southeast Asia and beyond," Biden told an audience at the prestigious George Washington University here today.

"India is obviously a key player and increasingly so in the Asia Pacific region. The United States and India have an increasingly bilateral relationship as our countries grow and deepen ties incredibly in broad range of areas," a senior Obama administration official told reporters during a conference call.

Four areas in particular would be at the top of the agenda of the visit of the Vice President, he said.

"The first would be of economic cooperation, where the Vice President would focus on issues of investment policies to intellectual property and speak to how we can work together to close the gap between where we are today and where we can be in our bilateral trade and investment and in our cooperations in multi-lateral trade investment forum," the official said.

In the second area of energy and climate, the official said Biden would speak to the work that the two countries need to do together to realise the promise of the civil nuclear agreement and the work that the two nations should be doing together to be leaders on addressing global challenge on climate change.

Identifying defence co-operation as the third area, the official said the US and India have built a strong foundation in this over the past few years.

"The Vice President would come to talk together, how we can come together to build even stronger and deeper co-operation going forward," he said.

The wide range of regional co-operation that the United States and India has embarked upon both in South Asia and East Asia relating to maritime security to counter terrorism would be the fourth area of focus of Biden's trip, he said.

In his policy speeches in Mumbai, Biden is expected to set out an "ambitious vision" for India US relationship.

"On the issue of defence and security, and regional co-operation I think he would point out that increasingly United States and India are coming into strategic convergence in terms of what our key interests are and how we can pursue them, related to maritime security and freedom of navigation, related to issues of stability to create regional integration and growth," the official said.

"It will be a speech geared not towards policy makers or government officials, but to the people of India," the senior administration official said.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.2 Update Cancelled, Says Carrier

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.2.2 update has been withdrawn by Samsung in favor of a newer version of Android, this according to Australian carrier Telstra who has relayed that information to its Galaxy Note 2 owners today.

Several days ago, a suspicious rumor popped up stating that Samsung had delayed the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.2 updates again and because of that, it would likely be moving on to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean instead. The rumor, at the time, seemed a bit odd considering that we?d seen Android 4.2 leak for the Galaxy S3 and the updates were both rumored for arrival in the third quarter after an internal delay.

Turns out, there might be some truth to that rumor as Australian carrier Telstra has told its Samsung Galaxy Note 2 owners that the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update has been ?withdrawn? and that the company will be pushing to update the Galaxy Note 2 with a newer version of Android which likely means Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Cancer, chemo led to veterans' lower risk of Alzheimer's

Military veterans diagnosed with most forms of cancer were less likely to develop Alzheimer?s disease, and those who were treated with chemotherapy received even more protection, according to a study released this morning at the Alzheimer?s Association International Conference in Boston.

The study of 3.5 million veterans found an inverse relationship between Alzheimer?s and all types of cancer except prostate and melanoma ? both of which are largely detected through screening rather than symptoms. Aggressive screening of veterans might find cancers that would not otherwise have caused problems, said researcher Jane Driver, in explaining why those cancers might not share the same relationship with Alzheimer?s.

Other research also supports this inverse relationship, including an Italian study released late last week, that found that those diagnosed with Alzheimer?s ran a 43 percent lower risk of developing cancer than those without the disease, and people with cancer had a 35 precent lower chance of developing Alzheimer?s. That study did not look as closely at individual cancers ? though it did find a weaker link with prostate cancer and melanoma ? or at treatment differences.

Driver said chemotherapy may offer extra protection because it reduces inflammation and may prevent brain cells from trying to divide. In Alzheimer?s, brain cells often try to divide when they shouldn?t, leading to their death, she said.

She said no one should take chemotherapy drugs, which are highly toxic, to reduce their risk of Alzheimer?s, but the link suggests that it may be possible to develop medications to address both diseases. Certain chemotherapy drugs may turn out to be more protective of the brain than others, she added, so it may make sense to prescribe them more often.

Another study released this morning showed that diabetics who take the drug Metformin seem to be better protected against Alzheimer?s than those taking other diabetes medications, including Sulfonylurea. Nearly 26 million Americans have type 2 diabetes, which is largely associated with lifestyle factors. Roughly half of those with diabetes develop Alzheimer?s as they age, so finding a drug that is also protective against Alzheimer?s is immensely important, said researcher Rachel Whitmer, an investigator with the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research.

In her study of nearly 15,000 patients with type 2 diabetes, those who took Sulfonylurea had a 26 percent increased risk of developing Alzheimer?s compared to those on Metformin. Not all patients can tolerate Metformin, but Whitmer said more research should certainly be done to see if that drug should be the first-line treatment for diabetes.

Other research discussed at the conference this morning suggests that postponing retirement may protect against Alzheimer?s and other forms of dementia, likely because it keeps people intellectually engaged for longer; and that socioeconomic differences such as education and income ? not lifestyle factors or health status ? may explain why African-Americans are more likely than whites to develop Alzheimer?s.

NASA Investigating Mysterious Spacewalk-Ending Water Leak

NASA officials aren't sure what triggered a leak of water into a spacewalking astronaut's suit, causing mission controllers to abort a planned 6.5-hour spacewalk after only one hour and 32 minutes Tuesday (July 16).

European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano reported "a lot of water" inside his helmet during his excursion outside the International Space Station (ISS) Tuesday. Because of the potentially dangerous situation,?mission controllers on the ground decided to abort the spacewalk.?

NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and Parmitano returned safely to the U.S. Quest airlock, and engineers began trying to figure out what caused the mysterious and unprecedented leak. [See photos from the aborted spacewalk]

"Clearly we have a problem at this point that we don't quite understand," Kenneth Todd, the ISS mission management team chair, told reporters Tuesday.?

NASA officials have already made some progress in narrowing down the source of the leak. Initially, Parmitano and Cassidy thought that the astronaut's drinking water may have been leaking into the suit. However, the spacewalk team says that the cooling system in Parmitano's suit is a more likely candidate.?

Parmitano is doing well after the incident.

"Luca's doing great," spacewalk officer Karina Eversley told reporters. "He's smiling and happy. All the crew is looking at the suits and reporting information."

The spacewalk by Parmitano and Cassidy began at 7:57 a.m. EDT (1157 GMT) and was scheduled to last 6.5 hours. However, it ended at 9:29 a.m. EDT (1329 GMT) ? just 92 minutes in ? because of the water in Parmitano's helmet.

"There is some in my eyes, and some in my nose," Parmitano said during the spacewalk. "It's a lot of water."

Officials have now determined that a total of 34 to 51 ounces (1 to 1.5 liters) of water leaked into Parmitano's spacesuit. Most found its way into his helmet, but other parts of his suit were affected as well, Eversley said.

Parmitano and Cassidy were scheduled to continue to prepare the outside of the orbiting laboratory for the arrival of a new Russian multipurpose laboratory module expected to arrive later this year, as well as work on a variety of other maintenance tasks.

NASA officials have said that the scheduled spacewalk activities are not urgent and can be completed during a later spacewalk, but nothing has been scheduled as of yet.

Today's spacewalk was the second in eight days for Parmitano and Cassidy and the 171st excursion supporting building and maintenance of the International Space Station. It marked Cassidy's sixth spacewalk and Parmitano's second. Cassidy has clocked 31 hours and 13 minutes of spacewalking time while Parmitano holds seven hours and 39 minutes.

On July 9, Parmitano became the first Italian astronaut to walk in space.

NASA's Karen Nyberg and Russian cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchikhin, Pavel Vinogradov and Alexander Misurkin share space with Parmitano and Cassidy aboard the orbiting lab. Together, the six spaceflyers make up the crew of?Expedition 36 .

The $100 billion International Space Station is the product of five space agencies representing 15 different countries. Construction of the laboratory began in 1998, and rotating crews of astronauts have continually staffed the orbiting laboratory since 2000.

Broken Arrow Family's Future Still Up In Air Following Tornado

BROKEN ARROW, Oklahoma -

One family recovering from May's tornado in Broken Arrow has been battling the excessive heat and what they say is a slow response time from their insurance company.

The Perrier family has been cleaning up ever since the twister touched down.?

Just over a month ago, the family was hunkered down in an interior bathroom as an EF-2 tornado ran over the Broken Arrow community. They're just trying to figure out now: are they going to repair this house or build an entirely new one??

"The adjusters and the structural guys that came out all said it was a very well built house and I'm very grateful for that," said Broken Arrow homeowner Steve Perrier.

Instead of relaxing by the pool or taking the day off, the Perrier family has been cleaning up their tornado damaged home.

"It's been tough. I have to count to 10 because it's tough. I want to go home, but as you can see I can't just come home and there are times that you just want to come home put your feet up and just sit down," said Lorey Perrier.

Lorey Perrier has been working inside the family home with no air conditioning. Temperatures are in the high 90s as the Tulsa area experiences the hottest week of the summer.

"Every body has their spirits up," Steve said. "It's just been non-stop since the storm.

They've been working on their home til 11:30 or later every night, he said.

They're getting settled into a rental home, but are anxious to find out what the next chapter of their life is going to be. They're hoping a decision from their insurance company comes soon.

The family's insurance agency, State Farm, gave us this statement:?

"Each claim is unique and is handled on its own merits, and we work to resolve all factors that may arise in the process. Our commitment is to help our customers recover as quickly as possible."

Debris has been piling up along the Perrier's busy street.

Steve Perrier, Homeowner, "Our hope is that we can demolish the house and rebuild either this house or another house whatever the case may be. But that's what we're hoping for. This house has got so much damage that I don't trust it anymore," said Steve Perrier, Broken Arrow homeowner.

The family says even public clean up efforts have been slow.

"You just have to smile and go on. We'll pick up the pieces and do what we have to do," Lorey said.

Governor announces 1,300 jobs to London and Winchester

MGN Online

MGN Online

FRANKFORT, Ky. ? Governor Steve Beshear today announced General Dynamics Information Technology, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), plans to create up to 1,300 new jobs at facilities in London and Winchester and make significant investments at both facilities.
?The Commonwealth has scored not one, but two major victories here, with 1,300 new jobs on the way to London and Winchester,? said Gov. Beshear. ?General Dynamics is a global company with a tremendous array of products and services, which means a wealth of opportunities for its employees.?
General Dynamics Information Technology provides information technology (IT), systems engineering, professional services and simulation and training to customers in the defense, federal civilian government, health, homeland security, intelligence, state and local government and commercial sectors. With approximately 21,000 professionals worldwide, the company delivers IT enterprise solutions, manages large-scale, mission-critical IT programs and provides mission support services.

Both new facilities in Kentucky will provide technical assistance for the technical implementation of the federal government?s Health Insurance Marketplace. The London site will be located on Old Whitley Road, and is expected to employ up to 1,000 people. The site in Winchester will be on Bypass Road, and should include approximately 300 employees. The company also has approximately 400 employees at an existing facility in Corbin.

General Dynamics will be staffing the new call center with customer service representatives during summer 2013. Prospective applicants are encouraged to apply by visiting the General Dynamics IT career page at www.gdit.com/careers and entering ?Kentucky? as the location on the job search page.

Job fairs in Winchester are planned at Bluegrass Community and Technical College, Winchester-Clark County Campus on Monday, July 15, from noon to 4 p.m. and Tuesday, July 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Job fairs are planned in London on Saturday, July 20, and Saturday, July 27, at Somerset Community College, Laurel Campus, 100 University Drive, Building 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

To encourage the investment and job creation in London and Winchester, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority preliminarily approved Vangent, which was acquired by General Dynamics in October 2011, for tax incentives up to $11.5 million through the Kentucky Business Investment program. The performance-based incentive allows a company to keep a portion of its investment over the term of the agreement through corporate income tax credits and wage assessments by meeting job and investment targets.

?This is fantastic news for our towns,? said Sen. Albert Robinson, of London. ?We have the wherewithal in terms of human capital and work ethic to get a big job like this done.?

?I am pleased that General Dynamics? new facilities will create 1,300 new jobs in Kentucky,? said Sen. R.J. Palmer, of Winchester. ?I am especially happy that Winchester will be the home of one of those facilities, and I welcome the 300 new jobs to our community. This investment and the jobs that will follow will provide a huge boost to our economy. I wish the company a long and prosperous future in Winchester.?
?I am thrilled with General Dynamics? decision to expand their operations here in Kentucky and Laurel County,? said Laurel County Judge-Executive David Westerfield. This multimillion-dollar investment will definitely stimulate the economic growth and development of our area, by adding these much-needed 1,000 new jobs. The Laurel County Industrial Authority, the Fiscal Court and I are pleased to have been involved in the process of helping General Dynamics locate here, and we are excited at the prospects General Dynamics? expansion will have on our community, both now and in the future. Laurel County wishes them many years of prosperity and continued growth.?

?We are extremely excited that General Dynamics is bringing 1,000 jobs to London and Laurel County,? said London Mayor Troy Rudder. ?These new jobs will have a major impact on the economics of the surrounding area. We thank the state and local officials who worked to make this project possible.?

?We have marketable buildings, a marketable workforce and a marketable community,? said Winchester Mayor Ed Burtner. ?To add a company like General Dynamics to our quickly growing list of recognizable corporate partners is very satisfying. Our community continues to work hard in developing relationships with our local, regional and state partners to ensure companies find us and call Winchester/Clark County home.

?General Dynamics choosing Winchester/Clark County is another huge plus for our local citizens in their quest to find quality jobs,? said Clark County Judge-Executive Henry Branham. ?We are fortunate to continue to attract such high quality companies like General Dynamics. Their confidence to invest in our community and our people validates all we are trying to do in our community when it comes to creating an atmosphere conducive to success.?

iPhone Tips: Tips on How to Unlock Your iPhone 5 Today

If you need to unlock your new or not-so-new iPhone 5 that is locked to AT&T, you have two options: call AT&T and ask them to unlock it or use a third party service like Keys2iPhone.com that sells iPhone unlocks. If you decide to go with option #1, be prepared to give AT&T your current phone number, name and other related information to verify your identity. You can call them directly at their customer support toll-free number: 1-800-331-0500.

At&t has repeatedly stated that as long as you meet their unlocking conditions, they will generate the unlocking code for your device. The conditions may be difficult to meet if you just bought a second hand iPhone from someone else, since they will need to verify that you are the original owner of the device before they can issue an unlock. Unfortunately, there are many unscrupulous sellers out there who can sell you a locked handset, or, even worse, a blacklisted iPhone in which case you can stop dreaming about getting it officially unlocked!

TIP: Always request the IMEI number of the iPhone you are about to buy and run it in the official Apple IMEI database to check if it has been reported stolen or blacklisted for some other reason.

For the reasons stated above it may be a real chore trying to get your iPhone 5 unlocked on your own. Naturally, the second option is to use a third party facilitating service that via their special relations with carriers secure official unlocks. There are many services out there ? some are more expensive than others. Since you have already invested good money in purchasing your iPhone, it is only wise to pay a little more for a sure thing and avoid unpleasant surprises down the road. You can check customer reviews before ordering an unlock.

AT&T iPhone 5 comes in one version with a nano-SIM card slot for CDMA and GSM networks. The AT&T uses GSM technology and once they unlock your GSM slot, you will be able to use your iPhone with any GSM provider in U.S. and all over the world. The unlock will work with most European carriers that also use GSM technology. Simply check the world GSM coverage map for a list of GSM mobile carriers in your country.

Foxx will resign as mayor Monday after confirmation as DOT head

Charlotte mayor Anthony Foxx says he will formally resign his position as the city's mayor after he was unanimously voted in as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation.

The US Senate confirmed Foxx as the nation's next transportation secretary in a vote of 100 in favor and none opposed at noon onThursday. The President was immediately notified.

"I am pleased that the Senate today voted unanimously to confirm Anthony Foxx as the next Secretary of Transportation," President Barack Obama released in a statement on Thursday afternoon.

"Anthony knows firsthand that investing in our roads, bridges and transit systems is vital to creating good jobs and ensuring American businesses can grow and compete in a 21st century global economy," he continued. "I welcome Anthony to my team, and I look forward to working with him as we aim to modernize the infrastructure that powers our economy."

After Foxx was confirmed by the Senate, North Carolina Senator Kay Hagan posted her congratulations to him on Twitter.

"Pleased the Senate has unanimously confirmed Mayor Foxx to become our next Secretary of Transportation. A proud day for NC," she tweeted. "Bipartisan vote indicative of Foxx's status as champion of transportation & infrastructure development that fuels economic growth."

Committee chair Senator Jay Rockefeller kicked off the vote in the Senate just after 11:30 a.m. Roll call began almost immediately due to the fact that there were no opposing speeches.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nevada, the majority leader, took a break from debating the immigration reform bill and hold a confirmation vote on Mayor Foxx.

The vote comes 60 days after the President nominated Foxx for the position to lead the US Department of Transportation.

Foxx sent a letter out to city council members and staff Thursday afternoon calling a special meeting at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 1st where he will formally resign his position as mayor of Charlotte.

The mayor also plans to discuss transition plans for a successor until a new mayor is elected in November.

Sen. Kay Hagan spoke on the Senate floor earlier in the morning - listing off Mayor Foxx's accomplishments while in Charlotte. Chief among them was the Lynx Blue Line and the growth and expansion at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

"Today is a proud day for all North Carolinians and a positive step for our nation as we continue the important work of rebuilding our infrastructure," Hagan said in a release after Foxx was confirmed.

"I am pleased that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle could come together to unanimously confirm Mayor Foxx, a true champion of transportation and infrastructure development with a proven record of making smart investments that fuel economic growth. Jobs are my number one priority, and I have full confidence that Anthony will approach this new job with an eye for how we can grow our economy as we update our nation's infrastructure.? Though he will be missed in North Carolina, I am eagerly anticipating the strong leadership he will bring to the Department of Transportation."

"I would also take this opportunity to thank outgoing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood for his service," her statement continued. "I was honored to have Secretary LaHood join my transportation roundtable in Charlotte several years ago, and it was abundantly clear that his expertise and passion for keeping our nation's infrastructure updated is unparalleled. In particular, he is to be commended for his willingness to put politics in service to our country. His example of bipartisanship should be followed more often, and I wish Secretary LaHood the best in his next steps."

Amtrak Chairman Tony Coscia and President/CEO Joe Boardman issued a statement after Foxx's confirmation, as well.

"Amtrak congratulates Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx on his confirmation today by the U.S. Senate.? He will play a pivotal role in providing critical federal investments for advancing intercity and high-speed passenger rail projects that enhance service, improve reliability, expand capacity, reduce trip-times and increase speeds.

"We also welcome Secretary Foxx to the Amtrak board of directors where he will help shape the future of America's Railroad and further improve our record-breaking financial and operational performance.

"As a former mayor of Charlotte, N.C., an Amtrak-served community, we believe Secretary Foxx understands that intercity passenger rail is a vital and necessary part of the national transportation network and provides mobility, connectivity, and economic development across America in rural communities, small and medium sized towns, and major cities.

"The Amtrak family welcomes Secretary Foxx aboard and we look forward to working with him to deliver more and better intercity and high-speed passenger rail service to the nation."

The US Senate Committee on Commerce, Transportation and Infrastructure held a hearing in May and approved the mayor's nomination earlier this month with bipartisan support.

The mayor promised lawmakers at his hearing that he would work across party lines in his new position and work on continuing a multimodal approach to the nation's transportation network like his predecessor, Secretary Ray LaHood has.
