Eric Ebron is one of the most athletic tight ends in all of college football. ?Not only does Ebron?s athleticism show up on the offensive side of the ball, but North Carolina?s coaching staff also used him as a situational pass rusher at times during his sophomore campaign.
During Ebron?s freshman season in 2011, he caught 10 passes and produced 207 yards (20.7 yards per reception) and a touchdown. ?Ebron took a big leap during his second season at Chapel Hill. ?As a sophomore in 2012, Ebron caught 40 passes and produced 625 yards (15.63 yards per reception) and four touchdowns.
Eric Ebron is an incredibly talented receiving tight end who must improve at doing the little things. ?In the games that I viewed, Ebron had too many dropped passes. ?Whether the drops had to do with focus or simply having poor hands, this is something that he must improve upon if he wishes to take his game to the next level. ?Ebron is an extremely smooth and explosive athlete who regularly uses his athletic ability to get behind linebackers and threaten the seam of the defense. ?Ebron also displays a considerable amount of toughness when running routes over the middle. ?Although he does not always catch every pass in traffic, he does not back down, and still keeps going over the middle unafraid of taking big hits. ?Ebron regularly fights for yards after the catch and he can be difficult for defenders to bring down once he gets a head full of steam. ?When forced to adjust to passes away from his frame, Ebron displays excellent body control, but struggles to come down with the passes too often. ?All in all, Ebron?s high upside as a receiver is apparent and cleaning up the dropped passes would be huge in taking the next step in his development.
Ebron is a very versatile tight end. ?He has experience playing in the slot and as an in-line tight end. ?With Ebron?s combination of supreme athletic ability and size, I could see a team flexing him out wide and forcing the defense to match up with him on an island with a cornerback, safety, or linebacker. ?Football is a game of matchups and explosive, versatile tight ends like Ebron are highly sought after for a reason.
As a blocker, Ebron does a solid job overall. ?Although he consistently gives great effort and typically executes his assignment, Ebron must do a better job of keeping his hands inside, lowering his pad level, and driving his legs on contact on a play-in, play-out basis. ?Doing these things will allow Ebron to engage with defenders longer while allowing him to move defenders further off the point of attack. ?One area where I was very impressed with Ebron was in his ability to understand where the run was going and seal his man away from the run. ?All in all, Ebron shows flashes of being a very good blocking tight end. ?To take the next step during his junior season, Ebron must do all of the little things correctly with much more consistency.
As a situational pass rusher, Ebron looks extremely explosive and flexible off the edge. ?Although I only saw him in this capacity in limited snaps, it was evident that he possesses some pass rush potential and I would not be surprised to see him pass rushing in an expanded role this season. ?I do not expect NFL teams to look at Ebron as a conversion candidate, but you never know. ?If a team believes that he has more potential as a pass rusher, it is possible that he could be moved to defensive end or outside linebacker at the next level.
It is easy to see that Eric Ebron has a ton of potential as an all around tight end prospect. ?There are simply not many tight ends on the planet with his combination of size and athleticism. ?If Ebron can do the little things with much more consistency, he has a great chance of being a high pick whenever he decides to declare for the NFL Draft.
